Planet Costume Services was established in 2017 by Emma Waugh and Liz Coleman. Having been involved collectively in the costume industry for over 30 years they have worked extensively in theatre and for private clients. Meeting at Derby Playhouse in 2006 Liz and Emma have collaborated on numerous projects. Whilst working for the renowned pantomime company First Family Entertainment, Emma and Liz were involved in building a successful wardrobe department supplying costumes to pantomimes nationwide. There they met whatever challenges were thrown at them whilst producing costumes for 10-12 pantomimes a year.
In 2017 Emma and Liz decided to take that experience and knowledge of costume making and create Planet Costume Services with the intention of creating a high quality costume service for the entertainment industry.
Whether it’s creating a 5 metre puppet costume for Birmingham Repertory Theatre, marketing campaign costumes for Crucial Sauce or a transformation costume for the Beast in Beauty and The Beast (whilst the actor is suspended above an arena audience) for Little Wolf Productions, they are certainly up for a challenge.
After studying Costume for the Screen and Stage BA Hons at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth Emma specialised in Costume Design and Costume Props. Her career has found her working predominantly as a Wardrobe Supervisor for Derby Playhouse and First Family Entertainment. As a Costume Designer Emma has credits for Derby Playhouse’s Macbeth and The Importance of Being Earnest, See How They Run for The Reduced Height Theatre Company. For First Family Entertainment she designed costumes for a variety of actors such as Priscilla Presley, Russell Grant and Hayley Mills as well as principal characters and ensemble. Having received a City and Guilds for Millinery, Emma has extended her skills into period and theatrical millinery. She is more than happy to create anything from the odd octopus costume to a tap dancing liquorice allsort. Other credits include Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Harrogate Theatre and nationwide touring.
After studying Theatre Costume Making at the Northern College of Costume, in York, Liz has worked predominantly in costume cutting and construction. She has developed a comprehensive knowledge period and modern pattern cutting for both male and female costumes whilst working for various repertory, commercial theatre and film. Her pantomime work has seen her making everything from light up fairy dresses to period frock coats. Having worked as wardrobe mistress, assistant and dresser in various theatres she has experience in how the areas of theatre wardrobe come together in the realisation of a show. Liz’s primary skills include pattern cutting, costume construction, corsetry, theatrical tailoring and tutu making. Her previous costume work has been for First Family Entertainment, Derby Theatre/Playhouse, Angels Costumiers, Curve Theatre, Manchester Royal Exchange, York Theatre Royal, Glyndebourne, Riverside Costumes as well as private clients. She’s been known to dabble in embroidery as well as knocking out a patchwork quilt from time to time.
She also makes a mean cupcake!
Both Emma and Liz have taught short courses and workshops in costume making at Nottingham Trent University, The Northern College of Costume and Yorkshire Coast College.
